123,000 smokers in the South West plan to kick the habit next week on the first annual No Smoking Day since the smoking ban.

This year's campaign, the 25th annual No Smoking Day, takes place on Wednesday 12 March, with millions of smokers across the UK signing up for The Great No Smoking Day Challenge.

Events are taking place across the region, with local stop smoking services, employers, GPs and others all set to provide help, support and advice to those that are ready to stop.

Research shows that around three in four smokers would like to quit.

No Smoking Day supporter Dr Rosemary Leonard said: "Within two days your body is free of nicotine, and after a fortnight you'll find your energy levels improving and your sense of smell restored. And, more importantly, you'll be less likely to die from lung cancer and heart disease.

"So take The Great No Smoking Day Challenge and join over a million others all committed to kicking the habit!"

No Smoking Day chief executive Dan Tickle added: "If you're ready to quit, there's never been a better time. Sign up for the Challenge and you can raise money to support your favourite charity while you quit - and we'll send you free supportive text or email messages.

"But don't forget the free local help that's available. Get help from your stop smoking service and you're up to four times more likely to succeed."
