Chippenham booze ban on the way

A blanket booze ban in Chippenham could be rolled out within weeks in a bid to stop drunken behaviour in the town.

North Wiltshire District Council has pressed on with proposals for the ban, despite the fact that town councillors rejected the suggestion in February.

Now the district council has launched a public consultation to see if a Designated Public Places Order should be placed in the town.

If the order gets the go ahead drinkers could face having their alcohol confiscated if they ignore police warnings to stop drinking in public.

Police and North Wiltshire Community Safety Partnership spearheaded the DPPO order, which would stretch from Stanley Park to West Cepen Way.

North Wiltshire lead member for community and wellbeing Coun Bob Causer said: "The summer months are a time when the warmer weather leads to an increase in drinking in public places and so a larger number of incidents and complaints.

"The council and its community safety partners have a duty to work together to reduce crime and disorder and alleviate the fear of crime and antisocial behaviour."

Public consultation began on Monday and councillors are set to debate the results on June 24.

Chippenham town councillors were the first town in Wiltshire to reject a DPPO, saying the ban was too widespread.

Between April and September last year the police were called to 240 incidents involving antisocial behaviour.

Of these, 47 involved the causing of actual bodily harm.

Sorry Guys - I disagree.

There are plenty of laws already in place to prevent anti social activities. We just need the police to actually do their job properly.

Between April and September last year the police were called to 240 incidents involving antisocial behaviour.

And were all these in the new restricted area? Did they involve drinking? Was the anti social behaviour confirmed and substantiated - or just alleged?

Very poor journalistic research there - does this rag have an agenda?

Seems to me Chippenham should follow the example of Boris in London

Out of those 240 incidents I wonder how many of them were prosecuted? And what about the civilised people who want to enjoy a glass of wine with a picnic in the park?

If the drinking is civilised then I am sure the police are not going to come and disturb you. However, I can't recall noticing anyone ever enjoying a nice glass of wine in the park. You tend to notice the buffoons with very evident cans of lager or WKD bottles acting like idiots.

Anyone with a wine glass would probably feel out of place anyway!!

I'm all for the police taking more action, I recently experienced anti-social behaviour brought on by drinking in the street. A small group of under 18's chose to gather outside our house at 1 am on a Saturday night/ Sunday Morning, and proceeded to fight, scream and argue amongst themselves. The police responded quickly, and the group soon left, but only after we had been subjected to nearly an hour of their ridiculous drink fuelled behaviour.
